Milton Hotel, Fort William

Milton Hotel, Fort William

ID: QZP40_CARD_5208 DESCRIPTION: The Milton Hotel, now the Ben Nevis Hotel & Leisure Club, is situated a mile north out of Fort William on the A82. In the 19th century the relative prosperity of Fort William led to a spate of villas being built on land above the High Street and out along the waterfront at Achintore. With the coming of the railway in 1894, and the increased tourist traffic, hotels started appearing, especially on the principal route in and out of the town, on the A82. In 1896 Fort William became the first British town to light its streets and houses by electricity, powered by a pioneering hydro-electric scheme.
