Gesto farm with Loch Harport and the Cuillin beyond
ID:QZP40_CARD_5479DESCRIPTION:Snow still lingers on the peaks of the Cuillin while the cattle enjoy some Spring warmth on the shore of Gesto Bay. These farm buildings are located on a promontory at the entrance to Loch Harport, on Skye's west coast. The white-washed steading complex dates from the 19th century and includes a boathouse and a circular hen house.
Gesto was settled by the oldest cadet branch of the Macleods of Dunvegan in about 1425. Despite family ties, there were regular disputes down the centuries, culminating in Captain Neil Macleod of Gesto losing the tack in the mid-nineteenth century, resulting in three farms being given over to sheep. Gesto House, seen here on the left, was occupied until the 1920s. Now a ruin, the earliest part of this former tacksman's house probably dates from the mid-eighteenth century although it was extended on several occasions.PLACENAME:Gesto, CoillorePERIOD:1960s; 1970sSOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Highland Libraries' Postcard CollectionAsset ID:37116KEYWORDS:
