The white marble statue of a widow and her child represents 'sorrow'. The memorial was designed by Inverness architects Alexander Ross & Sons, and sculpted by sculptors David A. Davidson, also of Inverness. It bears an inscription from Robert Burns:
'Gentle peace returning
'W' mony a sweet bairn fatherless
And mony a widow mourning'
