ID:QZP40_CARD_5698DESCRIPTION:Cluny Castle is located 3 km east of Laggan and was built in 1805 for the MacPhersons of Cluny. The original tower of the Cluny MacPhersons was destroyed in the aftermath of the battle of Culloden in 1746 by government troops, due to MacPherson of Cluny's support of the Jacobite cause.
The small Queen Anne porch was added to the front of Cluny Castle in 1891, and the northwest wing (seen on the left of this image) was added in 1908.
In his 1948 work, 'Highways and Byways in the Central Highlands', Paul Seton Gordon noted that there was a local tradition in the area that, while visiting the nearby Ardverickie estate in 1847, Queen Victoria attempted to purchase Cluny Castle, but the poor weather at the time dissuaded her.
Andrew Carnegie and his wife Louise leased Cluny Castle for nine summers in the late nineteenth century. Carnegie attempted to purchase the castle but the owner refused, and Carnegie subsequently bought Skibo Castle.PLACENAME:Cluny CastleDISTRICT:BadenochOLD COUNTY/PARISH:INVERNESS: LagganSOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Highland Libraries' Postcard CollectionAsset ID:37328KEYWORDS:
