Originally founded to capitalise on the golfing enthusiasts travelling to the town during the turn of the twentieth century, Nairn continues to be a popular destination for the same clientele. The Nairn Golf Course was founded in 1887 by Robert Finlay, an Edinburgh-born advocate who rose to become the Lord Chancellor of Britain. Initially designed by Andrew Simpson, Keeper of the Green at the Royal Aberdeen Golf Course, it was later revised and extended by Tom Morris.
