Dr. Alexander Stewart of Ballachulish, a noted Gaelic scholar, was minister at Nether Lochaber Parish Church in Onich between 1851 and 1901. He was involved in establishing the Mod, and a monument to him stands in the village. The area was a centre of slate quarrying, especially during the mid-nineteenth century.
