ID: QZP40_CARD_5810 DESCRIPTION: This postcard is titled 'Onich Village'. The village of Onich is situated at the entrance to Loch Leven, approximately 13km south of Fort William. Rev. Dr. Alexander Stewart of Ballachulish, a noted Gaelic scholar, was minister at Nether Lochaber Parish Church in Onich between 1851 and 1901. He was involved in establishing the Mod, and a monument to him stands in the village. The area was a centre of slate quarrying, especially during the mid-nineteenth century. The nearby slate quarries in Ballachulish operated until 1955.
