ID:QZP40_CARD_5893DESCRIPTION:The Royal Hotel in Portree, Isle of Skye. The hotel was reconstructed in the mid-20th century after a serious fire.
Portree is Skye's principal town. It's Gaelic name, Port Rìgh (King's Harbour), could well derive from James V's visit to the settlement in 1540, or is perhaps a corruption of Port Ruighe (slope harbour). The harbour, designed by Thomas Telford and built between 1818 and 1820, acted as a catalyst for the town's growth. From 1826 Portree had weekly steamship services from West Loch Tarbert via Tobermory, Isleornsay and Kyleakin, and from 1851 the weekly Glasgow to Stornoway called at the harbour.PLACENAME:PortreeDISTRICT:SkyeOLD COUNTY/PARISH:INVERNESS: PortreeSOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Highland Libraries' Postcard CollectionAsset ID:37526KEYWORDS:
