ID:QZP40_MELDRUM_021DESCRIPTION:Queen Mary's House on Bridge Street, Inverness, viewed through the castellated arch of the old Ness Bridge. The house was demolished shortly after this photograph was taken.
Mary, Queen of Scots, is reputed to have stayed in the house in 1562 but by 1968 only the medieval vaults of the original house remained. The vaults were retained in the entrance hall of the Highlands and Islands Development Board office block which was built on the site.
The bridge and arch were built between 1852 and 1855 and stood for just over a century before being demolished and replaced by the bridge which stands today (2019).PLACENAME:InvernessOLD COUNTY/PARISH:INVERNESS: Inverness and BonaCREATOR (AV):Edward MeldrumDATE OF IMAGE:August 1959PERIOD:1950sSOURCE:Highland LibrariesCOLLECTION:Edward Meldrum's Photographs of InvernessAsset ID:37927KEYWORDS:
