ID:QZP99_93134_05_03DESCRIPTION:A fine aerial view of Ullapool, on the shores of Loch Broom on the west coast of Scotland. The town was designed by Thomas Telford for the British Fisheries Society in 1788 to exploit the boom in the herring fishing industry, though by the 1830s, the industry was in decline. In the twentieth century, however, Ullapool found a new role in the fishing industry as the east coast fishing fleet began to use it as a safe anchorage in the west. The harbour attracted Eastern European factory ships and became the terminus of the Stornoway ferry.
The area around Ullapool is known for its hiking and hill walking opportunities. Beinn Ghobhlach can be seen in this photograph. The hill stands on a headland between Loch Broom and Little Loch Broom and is 2083ft high.
