Salting mackerel, Loch Skiport

ID: QZP99_94052_04_07 DESCRIPTION: The herring industry was very important to Scotland in the 19th and early 20th century but mackerel was also caught. Like herring, the mackerel were gutted, salted and packed into barrels to preserve them. This photograph shows barrels of mackerel on the pier at Loch Skiport (or Sgioport), on the east coast of South Uist. This image comes from a collection gifted to Edinburgh Central Library by Dr Isabel F. Grant. The collection includes photographs taken by a number of different photographers.
