Kentangaval, Barra

ID: QZP99_94052_09_04 DESCRIPTION: Three barefoot children outside houses at Kentangaval on the island of Barra. Kentangaval is a small township near Castlebay. The houses had dry stone walls and a thatched roof. There was no chimney in the roof. This allowed peat smoke to penetrate the thatch, which was used as fertilizer when the house was re-thatched. This image comes from a collection gifted to Edinburgh Central Library by Dr Isabel F. Grant. The collection includes photographs taken by a number of different photographers.
