ID:QZP99_94130_04_07DESCRIPTION:Coll is a small island north east of Tiree and north west of Mull. It measures about 12 miles by three miles and is known for its extensive beaches. The main settlement is Arinagour. In the 1840s the island was unable to sustain its population of over 1400 and Maclean of Coll encouraged about half the people to emigrate to Canada and Australia. In the 1850s the island was sold to the Stewarts of Glenbuckie who organised the island into large dairy farms instead of crofting townships.
This photograph shows a man standing outside his house on the island. The house is of a west Highland design with stone walls and a thatched roof. It also has a chimney built into the gable end which suggests it was of a late 19th or early 20th century design.
