ID:QZP99_94130_07_07DESCRIPTION:Black house at Strond in Harris. Strond is a small settlement in South Harris. Originally a farm, the land was broken into crofts in the 1830s and by 1841 there were 57 families living there. The superior weaving skills of two sisters from Strond caught the eye of the Countess of Dunmore in the 1840s and the Harris Tweed industry began. Strond continued to develop as a fishing community.
