ID:QZP99_97193_09_01DESCRIPTION:Group of people clipping sheep at Milltown fank on the Applecross Peninsula. The peninsula lies between Loch Torridon and Loch Kishorn and looks west across to Raasay and Skye. Until the coast road was built in the 1970s there was only one road onto the peninsula. It is known as Bealach na Ba, or Pass of the Cattle, and was originally a drove road for taking cattle to market. The road reaches a height of 2053 ft and is often impassable during the winter.
In 1850 nearly 3000 people lived in the thriving townships along the peninsula but the population declined through clearance and lack of local opportunities and amenities. Today only around 300 people live on the peninsula.
