ID:ROMGH_PA_94_148DESCRIPTION:MacDonald's shop in Fortrose, a small town on the south coast of the Black Isle. MacDonald advertised himself as a Bookseller, Stationer and Newsagent who also sold confectionery and refreshments and was licensed to sell tobacco. The goods displayed in the shop windows suggest that he also sold crockery, glassware and enamelware. Standing outside the shop are two ladies; one is Dorothy Kate MacDonald who married Ted Hayter from Newfoundland.
At the entrance to the shop stands a Sunday Post billboard proclaiming: '5000 more troops ordered to Shanghai'. This may have been in 1927, when conflict between nationalists and communists in China led to international concern about the safety of the considerable European population in Shanghai. Japan, the United States, France, Italy and Britain all sent troops in case of emergency.
