ID:SLD_188_2_6_02DESCRIPTION:Màiread Macdonald, who did this drawing, was born and spent her early years in Karachi. This beautifully coloured drawing was done in the 1960s, when Màiread and her sister Catriona were living in London with their parents. The drawing was most likely done remembering scenes and stories from her time in Karachi.
Above the drawing, the legend is written phonetically from Hindi, with the original script likely from Devanagari, the standardised script for the Hindi language. The legend in Hindi is written in a poetic, lyrical style similar to a sonnet. Màiread's drawing includes images from the country, including tigers, temples, and mounted hunters. Màiread has noted on the back of her drawing, 'pantomine tiger!'
Both Màiread and Catriona created a large collection of drawings and designs including ideas for wallpaper, textiles and ceramics and also copies for museum pieces.
