ID:ULLAPOOL_0003DESCRIPTION:The village of Ullapool was set up in the 1780s by the British Fisheries Society. The aim of the society was to create a wealth-producing trade in areas where people were living a life of basic self-sufficiency. The trade in Ullapool was to be herring - there were large numbers in Loch Broom. The herring was to be exported to Liverpool, Hull, London and Europe.
In June 1788, the first ship arrived with the workers and families that were to create the new village. The streets were laid out on a grid pattern and some of the new buildings included curing sheds, storehouses, a pier and a schoolhouse.
At first, the new fishing village was a success but in 1797 the herring failed to arrive in Loch Broom. This pattern repeated itself until the 1820s when the project was deemed a failure. The village was sold in 1847 for £5000.
Today Ullapool is a popular tourist centre. Since 1973 it has been the terminus for the vehicular ferry service to StornowayPLACENAME:UllapoolDISTRICT:LochbroomOLD COUNTY/PARISH:ROSS: LochbroomCREATOR (AV):Janine DonaldDATE OF IMAGE:May 2003PERIOD:2000sSOURCE:Janine DonaldAsset ID:39985KEYWORDS:
