The Campbell sisters from Dornie, Coigach

ID: ULMPH_2000_0305 DESCRIPTION: Four of the five Campbell sisters from Dornie, Coigach. From left to right are Bessie, Anna, Bella and Babs. Their other sister Jessie and their two brothers, John and George, do not appear in the picture. Murdo Campbell c1852 (son of Alexander (1813-1898) and Jessie (1829-1912)) a merchant grocer and his wife Alexina had eight children: Jessie May (b 1889), George (b 1890), Alexander (1892), Anabella ‘Anna’ (b 1894), Barbara Allan (b 1896), John (b 1898), Betsy ‘Bessie’ (b 1900) and Isabella (b 1902). Alexina, was born Alexina MacIver at Tigh Scoraig. The family had a general merchants business at Dornie, known locally as Dornie Shop (the family were known as Campbell Dornie). Jessie, Bella, John and George ran the shop while the other sisters lived and worked in the west of Scotland and Glasgow area. The shop was owned by the family for 120 years and it was thought to be one of the earliest shops in Ross-shire to give credit. It closed in the late 1960s, probably in 1968, shortly after the death of John. None of the seven Campbells ever married.
