Highland Outdoor Sacrament, c1900

Highland Outdoor Sacrament, c1900

ID: ULMPH_2000_0729 DESCRIPTION: Outdoor church services were quite a common sight in the Highlands from the mid-19th century. Sometimes the local church was too small to hold the entire congregation but more likely the congregation had broken away from the established Church of Scotland in the split of 1843 and formed one of the new Presbyterian denominations. Most of the congregation are sitting on the ground, although there are some benches. The small wooden hut is a 'Preacher's Hut', which kept the preacher dry.
