ID:KIGHF_HF_11_6_024DESCRIPTION:The bridge between Ardgay in Ross-shire and Bonar Bridge in Sutherland spans the River Oykel at the Kyles of Sutherland. The first bridge was built there to a Thomas Telford design in 1812 to carry the road from the south over to Sutherland and on to Caithness. This bridge was washed away by flood in 1892 and replaced in 1893 by the bridge in picture, a bridge of three iron girder spans to a Crouch & Hogg design. By the 1970s this was corroded and replaced by the present (2022) single span bridge in 1973. The Bridge Hotel was built in 1820 and at the time of picture would have been an important watering hole on the long road north, but on the opening of the Dornoch Bridge in 1991 Bonar Bridge was bypassed.
