The Floating Church - Eaglais Iarainn (Iron Church)
ID:PC_CM4_CHURCHDESCRIPTION:This book tells the remarkable story of the lengths to which the community of Sunart went to build a new place of worship following the Disruption in the Church of Scotland in 1843.
After the landowner refused their request for a piece of land on which to build a new church, the community raised £1,400 to have a Floating Church built at a shipyard in Glasgow. At almost 24 metres long, 7 metres wide and 8 metres high, and incorporating a vestry, a pulpit and seating for 400 people, it was a substantial vessel. It was launched in 1846 and towed to Loch Sunart where it was moored at Ardnastang Bay.PLACENAME:StrontianDISTRICT:ArdnamurchanOLD COUNTY/PARISH:ARGYLL: ArdnamurchanDATE OF IMAGE:1986SOURCE:Christine MathesonAsset ID:46255KEYWORDS:
