ID:PC_HIGHLANDLIVESTOCK_202DESCRIPTION:A busy scene at the harbour at Loch Skipport, South Uist, in 1898 with barrels of salted herring waiting to be exported. The pier at Loch Skipport was built in 1879 although by 1900, it had been superseded by Lochboisdale as the island's main harbour.
The photograph was probably taken from onboard the steamer Dunara Castle which sailed weekly from Glasgow to the Hebrides.
The photographer, Archibald Alexander "Archie" Chisholm (1859-1933) was the Procurator Fiscal in Lochmaddy. He published a volume of his picture postcards in 1904.PLACENAME:Loch SkipportDISTRICT:South Uist OLD COUNTY/PARISH:INVERNESSCREATOR (AV):Archibald Alexander ChisholmDATE OF IMAGE:1898PERIOD:1890sSOURCE:Highland Livestock Heritage SocietyCOLLECTION:Highland Livestock Heritage Society photographsAsset ID:46489KEYWORDS:
