Construction of the Ninian Central Platform at Kishorn

Construction of the Ninian Central Platform at Kishorn

ID: PC_HAMILTON_006 DESCRIPTION: The Kishorn Yard was developed as a manufacturing and fabrication yard for oil platforms and operated from 1975 to 1987. In 1975 work began on the north side of Loch Kishorn to construct a 150-metre diameter dry dock to house the first layer of the Ninian Central Platform. By 1977 there were over 3,000 people working at the yard. Two retired cruise liners, the Rangatira and the Odysseus, were purchased and moored in the loch for accommodation. All materials and people were to be brought in by sea or air. Upon completion, the platform was towed by seven tugs to its North Sea location. At 600,000 tonnes it was, at that time, the largest man-made moveable object. The platform was designed and built by Howard Doris Ltd.
