Inverness from the air, 1930s

ID: PC_MISCELLANEOUS_001 DESCRIPTION: Looking south across Inverness with the railway bridge and Waterloo (or Black) Bridge in the foreground and the Greig Street and Ness Bridges further upstream. The factory with the smoking chimney was known as the destructor. It burnt the town's refuse to generate electricity and, together with a hydro-electic plant at the Bught, was by the end of the 1920s sufficient to serve the town's demand for electricity. The building to the left of the factory was the swimming pool, which opened in 1936, was rebuilt in the 1980s, and was closed and demolished after the aquadome opened at the Bught in the 1990s. In front of the factory is the bowling green, which is still there today (2022). The building just visible behind the factory was the Pickfords warehouse.
