In early February 1989 when, following days of torrential rain, Inverness experienced its worst flooding in living memory. The central span of the Ness Viaduct was washed away, as was a footbridge connecting Ness Islands. The Black Bridge was closed and residents of Douglas Row, on the east side of the river were evacuated.
