ID:PC_GLENGARRY_ELLICE4_01DESCRIPTION:On returning from Canada in 1839, merchant and politician Edward 'Bear' Ellice bought the isolated estate of Glenquoich, part of the old Glengarry estate which had belonged to the MacDonells. Here he built a lodge on the shores of Loch Quoich, and every autumn entertained a stream of guests. Visitors included artists, writers, statesmen, diplomats, friends and relatives. A visitors’ book was kept between 1846 and 1863, illustrated with sketches, cartoons and poems added by various guests including Edward Landseer.
When Ellice first bought the estate it was considered an impoverished, wretched place, and he and his son worked hard over many years to improve the estate and support those who lived there. Bear remained active politically and in society until the end of his life, dying in his sleep in September 1863 a week after presiding at a banquet in Inverness to celebrate the opening of the Highland Railway.
