An earasaid (or arasaid) in the Sinclair tartan

ID: PC_GLENGARRY_COSTUME3_07 DESCRIPTION: A romanticised depiction of a woman in a simple plaid – here shown as little more than a blanket. It is one of many pictures by the painter Robert Ronald McIan (1803 – 1856), probably best known for his numerous illustrations in the 1845 book The Clans Of The Scottish Highlands, together with its sequel from 1848, Gaelic Gatherings (subtitled ‘Or The Highlanders At Home, On The Heath, The River And The Loch’). McIan learned to paint while working as an actor, and submitted his first landscape to the Royal Academy in 1836. Increasingly nationalistic in later life, his images of clansmen and domestic Highland life contributed to the fashion for romantic Scottish and Gaelic stylings led by Queen Victoria, to whom his first book was dedicated.
