ID:PC_GLENGARRY_VICTORIAN_04DESCRIPTION:The interior of a bothy at Glenquoich, typical of the black houses found in the area.
It was painted by Janie Ellice (1813 – 1864). The diarist and amateur artist, Katherine Jane Balfour, married Bear’s son, Edward Ellice junior, in 1834. After the death of Bear’s wife, he relied on his daughter-in-law Janie’s considerable talents as hostess when entertaining at Glenquoich Lodge, and at his house in London. As well as drawing and painting, she sang well, accompanied herself on piano or guitar, and was fluent in French, Italian and Gaelic.
