ID:KIGHF_IF_GRANT_28DESCRIPTION:Pitmain Lodge in Kingussie. In 1943 Dr. I. F. Grant bought the lodge and three acres of ground (for cottages) to house her museum collection. Within the lodge artefacts from her collection were displayed both in associated groups and in open 'room' settings. Within the grounds Dr. Grant used existing structures, as well as creating new structures, as settings for her collection to interpret Highland life.
The Highland Folk Museum opened here on 1 June 1944 (having previously been housed in disused churches in Iona and Laggan). The interpretation was completed with cattle, sheep and goats. Today the museum is acknowledged as Britain's first open air museum, being almost ten years ahead of any others.PLACENAME:KingussieOLD COUNTY/PARISH:INVERNESS: Kingussie and InshSOURCE:Highland Folk MuseumCOLLECTION:Highland Folk Museum Photographic CollectionAsset ID:49410KEYWORDS:
