In 1959, the Government proposed building a series of new roads in the Highlands. One of the suggested routes was between Shieldaig and Torridon, known as the Balgy Gap. Construction commenced in March 1961 and the road was formally opened in September 1963.. The road linked the B857 (Lochcarron – Shieldaig road) with the B858 (Torridon – Kinlochewe road).
