Aberchalder Station, Invergarry and Fort Augustus Railway

Aberchalder Station, Invergarry and Fort Augustus Railway

ID: PC_GLENGARRY_FOLDER_09_09_02_03 DESCRIPTION: Aberchalder station looking north towards Fort Augustus in 1914. The Invergarry and Fort Augustus Railway ran from Spean Bridge to Fort Augustus via Invergarry. Together with Lord Burton (the tenant at Glenquoich), Edward Charles Ellice was involved for many years with the Railway, a venture that ended in financial disaster. The Act authorising the construction of the railway was passed in 1896, and the line opened for use in July 1903. For the first five years it was operated by the Highland Railway, then from 1908 until its closure it was operated by the North British Railway. The line was intended to be the first part of a rail link between Fort William and Inverness, but got no further than Fort Augustus due to disagreements between the West Highland Railway and the North British Railway on one side and the Highland Railway on the other. It closed to passengers on 1 December 1933, and finally to goods on 1 January 1947. The stations on the line were: Spean Bridge (junction with West Highland Railway); Gairlochy; Invergloy Platform; Invergarry; Aberchalder; Fort Augustus; Fort Augustus Pier.
