Angus Og

The Ewen Bain Angus Og Cartoon Collection is a unique collection held at the Skye and Lochalsh Archive Centre containing several thousand original cartoon drawings created by cartoonist Ewen Bain. The collection also includes sketch books, storyboards, newspaper cuttings of printed cartoons and other related objects.

Whilst Ewen Bain is best known for the Angus Og series of cartoons that first appeared in the Bulletin before being published in the Daily Record from 1960 through to 1989, he also created many other single cartoons that featured in different newspapers and magazines. These include an earlier cartoon series based on extra-terrestrial creatures called 'The Bleeps' which was published in the Bulletin in the late 1950s.

Angus Og, the wily highlander, and his friends from the fictional Island of Drambeg in the Utter Hebrides were familiar faces across Scotland throughout the latter half of the 20th Century. The cartoons share stories inspired by contemporary events and explore how communities work. Ewen Bain demonstrates a strong understanding of universal human emotions and motivations which are as relevant today as they ever were. He explores issues such as the environment and climate change, social imbalances, impacts of tourism, language, culture and identity.
